Explosion Mistaken For Plane Crash Near Vega Chemical
In Beaufort, residents misread a chemical plant blaze at Vega Chemical Corp as a plane crash. The fire, starting after 1 p.m., injured four Marines and three civilians, with damages estimated near half of Vega's $2 million investment. The blaze was controlled around 6:50 p.m. and centered in a reactor converting chemicals to liquid fertilizer.
