Phase 4 reoccupation as highway reopens in Graniteville

The Aiken Augusta Highway and Richland Avenue reopened Saturday as phase four of a five phase reoccupation begins for Graniteville residents. About 700 to 800 people returned home, lifting total evacuees back to roughly 4,200 of 5,400. Road curfews and ongoing cleanup at the derailment site continue.

Avondale Mills announces an open house on 13A at the school site with a public help line 211 for updates on chemical cleanup. Contractors familiar with the area will present safety briefings and contact information for residents and workers.

The Aiken Mall concourse hosted the opening of the Aiken Camellia Show with 22 judges and 20 clerks evaluating blooms. The event ran 3 to 8 p m Saturday and continues today from 146 p m.
