Tonight at 7 00 the Aiken County Board of Education meets at 1000 Brookhaven Drive Then at 7 30 USC Aiken ATC and the African American Student Alliance present MLK Community Celebration 2001 A Day for Everyone at USCA Etherredge Center Also at 3 00 the Aiken Camellia Show takes place at Aiken Mall and a Sunday Camellia display runs all day at the same mall.

Gas drive off and vandalism report in Aiken blotter

A gas drive off reported at Depot n Silver Bluff Road around 2 15 pm Monday involved a man driving a black 1955 Chevrolet with a tag ending 683 taking about 19 dollars of fuel. Separate incidents include deliberate damage to a man s car hood and windshield around 2 30 pm Monday and an arrest for drunken driving with an open container after an off duty deputy observed erratic driving. Vandalism damaged four Hahn Village vehicles with a tire puncture each and a Ford Ranger tied to Aiken Housing Authority lost tires totaling 950 dollars. Police contact numbers and anonymous tips lines are provided.

Aiken County Board of Education Seeks Input on Budget

The Aiken County School Board meets at 7 pm at district headquarters 1000 Brookhaven Drive near Aiken Mall. It will collect input from across the district on priorities for the 2001 2002 budget. Call 641 2428 for more details.

Renewal of Aiken Horse Races Sets March Dates

The Aiken Triple Crown returns with races on March 17 24 and 31 at the Aiken Training Track and McGhee’s Mile. The Aiken Steeplechase on March 24 draws large crowds with about 30 000 attendees last year. Tickets for all three events are not yet available. For details call 648 9641.

Dream still alive at MLK observance at Savannah River Site

Dozens of Savannah River Site employees attended a Martin Luther King Day program hosted by Wackenhut Services. Johnny Brown a 13 year old Georgetown preacher shared King's ideas that freedom begins in the mind and heart. Marshall Smith of Orangeburg performed a King speech from the 1960s urging an end to racism. King's remarks included opposition to U S involvement in Vietnam and criticism of nuclear arms leadership.

Nell Arnett's Cafe and Bistro Opens After Change

Pat's Restaurant near Richland Avenue is sold to John Proctor and Randy Cikowski. The diner shifts from country style cooking to a varied menu with ham and eggs, light lunches, and new items. The name honors Proctor's mother, Nell Arnett. Open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Child Find Screening Offered Thursday at Cedar Creek Church

A free Child Find Screening will be held Thursday from 8:30 to 11:30 at Cedar Creek Church 3001 Banks Mill Road for birth to years old children who may have delays in talking seeing hearing thinking playing or moving.
