Cancer rates in Savannah River area show two excesses

A study of 22 Georgia and South Carolina counties downstream of the Savannah River Site finds overall cancer rates similar to rural areas. Two exceptions emerge: esophageal cancer higher among African American men and cervical cancer 45 percent above expected among African American women. Researchers plan further investigations led by Dr. Daniel T. Lackland at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Railroad caboose finds new home beside Langley library

A Norfolk Southern caboose was moved and placed beside the Langley Depot that now houses the Midland Valley Public Library. Two cranes donated by Carolina Cranes Inc lifted the 54 000 pound car onto tracks in a community history project led by the Midland Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and supported by LaVana McKenzie Gloria Busch Johnson and Friends of the Library.

Hanford reactor kept online as tritium backup plan

The Department of Energy will keep the Fast Flux Test Facility at Hanford in a semi operable standby for at least two years while it studies tritium production options. Secretary Hazel O'Leary framed the plant as a safety net and possible backup source amid ongoing dual track talks with accelerator and other reactor options.

Tritium interim project debated for Hanford reactor role

Richland analysts back interim tritium production at the Fast Flux Test Reactor to bridge to a medical isotope market while opponents in Congress fault DOE planning. The city cites continued usage support from five area communities and notes funding would avoid environmental restoration money, with a contract expected in early 1998.
