A Windsor man, John W. Payne, a U S Air Force retiree, stands trial in Aiken County General Sessions Court over alleged abuse of a 9 year old girl. The retrial follows a 1980 mistrial after a five woman seven man jury could not reach a verdict.
Roosevelt Bryant, 23, was found guilty by a Greenwood County jury of the June 1979 murder of Sandra Fulmer Griffin. Circuit Judge Howard Ballenger sentenced him to life in prison after moving the trial from Aiken due to publicity. Bryant's partner Fesse Lee Laney pleaded guilty to Griffin's murder in 1980 and also received a life term.
A break-in at Brenda Williams home on 118 Daily Drive Lynwood led to a $550 loss including a color TV and stereo. A separate entry reports Nancy McKie of Rt 2 Box 78 North Augusta losing a sewing machine valued at $300 per sheriff’s department records.
Aiken police report says Roses at Store found a money bag containing 1800 dollars in cash and 1200 checks on Tuesday. Four vehicles with Illinois plates were in the parking lot. occupants described as Koreans Yugoslavians and Russians handed over 1800 dollars. Detectives say three vehicles were seized. Suspects are held for possible deportation hearings at immigration officials in Atlanta.
