An Arab hijacker who took control of an Alitalia DC-9 with 89 aboard surrendered after 12 hours. He demanded freeing 25 prisoners in Tunisia, but no one was hurt. The plane, on a Rome to Tunis flight, landed in Palermo after Tripoli appeared closed by a sandstorm.
A former mental patient Joseph Hugh Ryan, 31, who visited the FBI office first, arrived at the Secret Service lobby armed and quarreled with agents. Agent Stewart P. Watkins, 39, was shot, and Ryan was killed by another agent.
The Associated Press reports a second fall in wholesale unroasted bean prices with ten cent per pound cuts on Maxwell House Folger's and Hills Brothers.
