Mass donor bequest funds Hopkinton and Boston libraries
The Hopkinton and Boston libraries face a funding windfall of over 3 million dollars from the estate of Bernard J. McGovern, a retired letter carrier. The gift requires court approval to fund Hopkinton’s expansion, since the money must be used as specified in the will. Hopkinton’s library, receiving about 1.2 million, is crowded and needs a larger children’s department, computer space, and a meeting room. Boston’s library system receives the larger share and has a yearly acquisition budget around 3 million. The bequest was completed by McGovern in 1940. his niece Virginia Bernsten, the final beneficiary, died in 2000.
