Bar Delegation Divided Over 2nd Family Court Seat

Five members of the Legislative Delegation split over backing Peter R. Nuessle of Aiken for the 2nd Family Court judgeship before a bar association opinion. The Aiken County Bar Association voted 45 to 5 for Thomas P. Murphy of North Augusta. The Legislature will make the final choice, likely following delegation lines.

Resentencing to Include Case Evidence in Koon Trial

Solicitor Robert J Harte says resentencing for Paul Koon will retake case evidence before a new jury. The trial will be shorter as guilt phase and verdict are not included, but a new sentencing phase with closing arguments and jury charge will occur. Harte intends to seek the death penalty again, with resentencing likely within eight months at a special term of court.

County Paving List Deadline Extended by Delegation

The Legislative Delegation granted extra time for Aiken County to finalize its road paving priority list, extending the informal Jan. 15 deadline to Jan. 20. The delegation also heard budget needs for county schools, including a five year recovery plan costing 37.4 million, with year one at 17.0 million.

Belvedere Promises Referendum on Water District Abolition

Belvedere residents are poised for a referendum to abolish the Belvedere Water and Sewer District. Sen. Thomas L. Moore and Rep. Thomas E. Huff voiced strong support for placing the issue on the ballot alongside an April 13, fire commission election, citing petitions with 1,736 signatures opposed to the 93 mill tax.

1982 Price Rise Is Smallest In 11 Years

Wholesale prices rose 3.5 percent in 1982 the smallest gain in 11 years and less than half 1981's rise. Gasoline fell 8.6 percent while December marked a tiny 0.1 percent increase. Food costs rose 2.1 percent, energy and oil prices eased, and unemployment hit 10.8 percent amid ongoing recession.
