The plan proposes about 6 billion dollars over four years to clean up Department of Energy sites. Stimulus funding would accelerate site work and create about 10 000 jobs. The Energy Park Initiative would reuse cleaned areas for new energy generating facilities and sustain long term employment.
The facility covers 310 square miles with 10 000 staff and a 3 3 billion six year liquid waste contract plus an 800 million annual M O and contract. Began in the early 1950s to provide materials for nuclear devices and now focuses on waste processing storage and decommissioning of 35 million gallons of radioactive liquids in 49 underground tanks.
Oak Ridge was created under the Manhattan Project to separate and produce uranium and plutonium for bombs. Today the site focuses on national cleanup, environmental restoration, decontamination and decommissioning of facilities, and management of legacy wastes, with a budget of 2.9 billion for FY 2008 and a staffing level around 13 000.
An internal DOE document outlines a plan to accelerate cleanup at SRS and other sites with a 6 billion investment over four years. Footprint reductions could open 200 square miles at Savannah River Site and cut maintenance costs while enabling energy parks and rapid deployment of facilities, boosting jobs and tax base.
