Marines Move Out as Gulf Deployment Increases
Two tugboats guided the USS Gunston Hall from Morehead City as North Carolina bases prep for possible action in the Persian Gulf. About 7,000 Marines of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade are bound for the Middle East with 2,500 departed already and the rest due by Monday night. A spokeswoman could not confirm aboard numbers. The Wing moves mirror Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's order to muster 62,000 troops for potential Iraq action by early February, with USS Bataan also departing Norfolk after loading 1,000 Marines from Camp Lejeune.
