South Carolina farmers posted record yields in 1994 for cotton soybeans and peanuts according to the Agricultural Statistics Service. Cotton output reached 380000 bales, an 86 percent jump, at 818 pounds per acre. Soybeans yielded 15.7 million bushels, about 27 bushels per acre.
Greenville firm Fluor Daniel Inc selected as construction manager for a $50 million 17 000 seat Upstate Arena in downtown Greenville. Project to create up to 250 on site jobs and 650 statewide by completion in late 1996. Local participation emphasized by developer Carl Scheer.
A fire at Spring Crest Community Care Center in Gaffney forced the evacuation of 54 residents. The ward blaze was contained to a bedroom closet near the rear. firefighters took 15 minutes to control it with only smoke and water damage to the rest of the building. State and local authorities are investigating.

Senator W Greg Ryberg praised Gov Campbell as ex ecutive order keeps Aiken Regional Medical Centers angioplasty program alive. The move, drafted with Sen Moore and Ryberg, allows Dr David Cundey to continue life saving procedures in Aiken, signaling business minded leadership and community safety.
Former New Ellenton Mayor Randy W. Shaw pleaded guilty to fraud forgery theft and misconduct in public office over a $5 million sewer project that failed over four years. Judge James W. Johnson Jr suspended most sentences while ordering concurrent terms and a 24 month federal sentence for mail fraud. Shaw, 40, said he is broke and destitute.
Pilot Tony Denekamp 33 of Swainsboro and three others died when a twin-engine Cessna 414 crashed after engine failure near Bush Field in Augusta. Two people inside the brick Southland Timber Co. building were injured and a fire followed the impact. The victims include Richard L. Brown 46 president of Advanced Metal Components Don Braswell 26 project engineer and Richard Parks 41 a Swainsboro lawyer.
Aiken County relies on the Savannah River Site with 20 000 jobs to keep unemployment low while new capital investment in 1994 reached 281 2000 million and created 390 new jobs. Unemployment rose from 4.4 percent in 1990 to 8 percent in 1993 though capital investment surged.
