Why rabies cases rise across a wide area

Health officials cite five main causes tied to wildlife encroachment and human behavior. Rabies remains endemic in wildlife as humans intrude on habitats, rural free-roaming pets spread infections, unneutered cats and dogs propagate the disease, garbage dumps attract wild scavengers, and low vaccination rates leave many pets unprotected. The 1988 Clemson area figures show 127 statewide cases, with Aiken and Saluda counties reporting notable clusters amid a raccoon-driven spread.
