Graniteville man attends his own funeral in wartime escape tale
John L Carpenter of Graniteville recounts a World War II escape after his plane was shot down over German occupied France on Bastille Day 1943. He evaded capture with the help of the French underground, spent weeks in hiding and a church, crossed the Pyrenees to Barcelona, then returned to the United States just before his own funeral. Carpenter later learned of his supposed death when a package marked deceased arrived.
