A Miami based firm bought 10.2 percent of Graniteville Company stock making it the largest shareholder of the Aiken County textile firm. Southeastern Public Service Co paid about 5.3 million for 441 380 shares on the open market. The Posner company says the purchase is for investment and should not affect operations. A 13D form will be filed with the SEC as required for holdings above 5 percent.
In Geneva negotiators from the United States and the Soviet Union resumed discussions on limiting nuclear arms in Europe. The session lasted two hours and ten minutes and occurred after sanctions over Poland. Talks were held at U S Arms Control offices.
Detroit reports Ford Motor Co and General Motors officials meet with United Auto Workers to demand substantial reductions in labor costs. They warn that without dramatic union concessions the U S auto industry could face a death knell as competition from foreign manufacturers intensifies.
During a nuclear weapons seminar Dr John Ruoff from the Palmetto Alliance was asked about his advanced degrees. He quips his PhD was in Southern history focusing on Southern women and notes he studied the nuclear family. A 2 year old recites a blessing at dinner and offers jelly bread in place of daily bread.
Owens-Corning Fiberglas in Aiken will lay off 125 workers this week as the third round of cuts since November, bringing total layoffs to 305. Plant manager Robert A Hrubala cited weak sales. 1,700 people are employed there, with Teamsters Local 86 representing the union.
Arctic air heats up buying as residents stock antifreeze space heaters thermal underwear gloves and electric blankets. Shelters and retailers report rising sales while Aiken Cablevision plans temporary outages to protect equipment during possible icy conditions.
Schools face heat and water issues as freezing temperatures strain aging systems. Classrooms hold 58 to 62 degrees while some campuses double up in gymnasiums. Twelve of 46 schools report broken water pipes and roofs risk leaks with coming rain. decision on tomorrow’s operation to be made early.
