Hampton Mansion history and Sisters keep its legacy alive
The Hampton Preston house built in 1820 by Ainsley Hall spots the Hampton family tale from Mary Cantey to Wade Hampton III. The mansion served as Sherman’s HQ, faced burning, and was saved by the Ariline Sisters of Columbia who used it as a convent then a college, boarding house, and finally a state restored site opened in 1968. Tours reveal family crests and pieces like a silver egg holder, with upstairs exhibits including a Thackeray tea service gift.
