Savings Bond Shift Cuts Series E In 1980
The Series E savings bond issued since 1941 will be replaced by a higher priced Series EE bond on January 2 1980. A $25 E bond costs $18.75 with 6 percent interest and five year maturity. EE bonds start at $50 face value cost $25 and mature in 11 years nine months. Investments under $1,000 earn more than commercial accounts. banks offer varied rates. The change aims to save about $20 million annually by reducing administrative costs.
