President Ford delivers his final State of the Union before a joint Congress session. A senior aide calls it an upbeat mansions swansong as Ford outlines his 29month stewardship since ascending to the presidency. The address runs about 40 to 45 minutes and airs at 9 p.m. EST on major networks.

Unemployment Drops as Prices Rise Sharply in December

Unemployment fell from 8.1 to 7.9 percent last month while wholesale prices jumped, led by food costs for coffee pork and poultry. Overall prices rose nine tenths of a percent with industrial prices slowing and natural gas easing after months of increases.

Aiken County Council selected Ralph F. Cullinan 6 to 5 as vice chairman for one year during a special meeting. Aiken police arrest George Mitchell Jr. in the strangling death of 20 year old Patricia Ann Johnson. The body was found in an empty house on Richland Avenue. Autopsy confirms murder by strangulation. Police report Rosemary Mitchell, ex-wife of the suspect, found the body.

Ralph Mullikin, 19, of Belvedere, jailed for 18 months on a drug charge and one year for carrying a pistol. The sentences run consecutively with the pistol term suspended on three years probation. Mullikin arrested December 20 with 16 Valium tablets and crushed Valium. He claimed pills were for personal use and nerves.
