South Carolina announced 12 of its 17 athletic programs posted GPAs of 3.0 or higher for fall 2005, with a 2.978 average across 473 student athletes. Multiple teams, including women's golf and softball, posted record-high GPAs.
Bruce Sutter joined the Hall of Fame as the fourth reliever to gain election, receiving 400 of 520 votes (76.9 percent) on the BBWAA ballot. He is the first pitcher elected with no career starts, celebrated by family after the call from New York. Jim Rice finished second with 337 votes, while Goose Gossage trailed.
South Aiken Sophomore Jamal Davis scored a career high 14 points fueling a 21-4 game ending run in a 58-37 win over Lexington High School. Coach Carlos Hope praised Davis while a Lexington run and a technical foul shifted momentum in the fourth quarter.
Aiken High School split both basketball games at Orangeburg-Wilkinson. The girls won 43 to 24 as Shalisa Blocker led with 15 points and the team improved to 7-8 overall and 2-0 in region play. The boys lost 55 to 50 despite Xavian Robinson scoring 17 and Demarcus Sullivan adding 12.
