Recycling program shows high costs and steady nonprofit gains
Aiken and North Augusta split recycling costs with about 23 dollars per ton for tipping and transport. Inmate labor at the Lower Savannah Work Release Center aids sorting at the Materials Recovery Facility, turning bales into resin and fibers for Mohawk Industries and other buyers. The program costs around 48 thousand dollars annually, offset by revenue from sale of recyclables and inmate labor.
