Weather brief reports temperatures dropping to the mid 20s tonight with cloudy skies ahead as winds ease. A warming trend begins, with highs rising into the 30s by Tuesday as sunshine returns.
Ai ken announces the 1985 Triple Crown lineup with three events in March. The Aiken Trials for young Thoroughbreds run March 16 at the Aiken Training Track, the Aiken Hunt Meet March 23 at Clark Field, and the Aiken Sulky Races March 30 at the Aiken Mile Track.
The 1985 Masters will be held April 11 to 14 at Augusta National Golf Course. The dates have been announced for this year’s tournament and may affect schedules for players and fans alike.
Don Preston Williams 37, of Martinez Georgia, posted a 25000 bond and was released with conditions not to contact Cyrus Lee Howard’s family. He must remain in South Carolina or Georgia. no hearing date set. Williams, a former U S probation officer, was in custody since December 15 after surrendering and Howard, 49, was found shot near North Augusta December 14.
U S Representative Butler C Derrick and his wife have separated. Mrs Derrick formerly worked as an NBC News producer in New York and NPR editor in Washington. The couple married May 31 1983, marking his second marriage.
Joseph Carl Shaw, 29, former altar boy and military policeman, was executed by electric chair in Columbia for the 1977 murders of Carlotta Hartness and Tommy Taylor after pleading guilty to earlier rape and murder. He spoke of forgiveness and asked others to stop killing, while witnesses described the process and final moments before his body was taken to a hospital.
Condemned killer Joseph Carl Shaw received a telegram from his former high school coach at St Edward School in Louisville with a message of love. Shaw also received a card signed by 110 inmates at Kirkland Correctional Institution expressing heartfelt thoughts and prayers.
The state has executed 241 inmates since 1912 under a death penalty statute later ruled unconstitutional for arbitrariness. Among the group 195 were Black, 46 White. two women. Most were convicted of murder, with others for rape and assault with intent to ravish. The youngest was 14, oldest 66, average age 28.1. Joseph Carl Shaw was the first executed under the eight year old statute.
Lendol Hicks, a Richland County Sheriff’s investigator, watched condemned killer Joseph Carl Shaw through safety windows at 5 am. Hicks sat with Billy Taylor, Monsignor Thomas Duffy, Shaw family members, and two media witnesses in the Central Correctional Institution witness room.
U.S. Rep. Walter Fauntroy will keynote the Martin Luther King Memorial Services at USC Aiken. The event Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Student Activities Center marks the spring speakers series. The DC Democrat and minister has pushed for full District voting rights and opposed apartheid.
South Carolina state Rep. Herbert Kirsch promotes a bill to allow stores to open 1 to 6 PM Sundays with no sales restrictions and suspend Sunday employee limits. The measure targets uneven blue law enforcement while preserving conscientious opposition and keeps some nonessential item rules in suspense.
