Bond Posted, Williams Released In Howard Killing Case

Don Preston Williams 37, of Martinez Georgia, posted a 25000 bond and was released with conditions not to contact Cyrus Lee Howard’s family. He must remain in South Carolina or Georgia. no hearing date set. Williams, a former U S probation officer, was in custody since December 15 after surrendering and Howard, 49, was found shot near North Augusta December 14.

Shaw Is Executed In Electric Chair In South Carolina History

Joseph Carl Shaw, 29, former altar boy and military policeman, was executed by electric chair in Columbia for the 1977 murders of Carlotta Hartness and Tommy Taylor after pleading guilty to earlier rape and murder. He spoke of forgiveness and asked others to stop killing, while witnesses described the process and final moments before his body was taken to a hospital.

Telegram from Coach Sends Hope to Shaw in Prison

Condemned killer Joseph Carl Shaw received a telegram from his former high school coach at St Edward School in Louisville with a message of love. Shaw also received a card signed by 110 inmates at Kirkland Correctional Institution expressing heartfelt thoughts and prayers.

South Carolina Executions Under Death Penalty Statute

The state has executed 241 inmates since 1912 under a death penalty statute later ruled unconstitutional for arbitrariness. Among the group 195 were Black, 46 White. two women. Most were convicted of murder, with others for rape and assault with intent to ravish. The youngest was 14, oldest 66, average age 28.1. Joseph Carl Shaw was the first executed under the eight year old statute.
