The council approved a tobacco prohibition at the new Government Center after debate. The rule bans all tobacco products and smoking devices, accompanying building policies were also approved at the Tuesday regular meeting.
County Council divided over a tobacco free policy for the Government Center under construction on University Parkway. The plan bans all tobacco products in and around the building including the parking area with a split vote and talk of a designated outdoor smoking area for county employees.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley outlined education reform including reading initiatives, aid for low income districts, and funding for technology. Aiken County officials welcomed the plan noting potential funding for a reading coach in most elementary schools and partial funding for seven schools.
