Israel destroys 32 homes in Rafah refugee camp attack

Israeli bulldozers flattened 82 homes in Rafah Gaza, retaliating for a deadly assault on an Israeli outpost that left four soldiers dead. Hamas claimed responsibility while disputes emerged among Hamas leadership about further attacks as U S. efforts for a cease fire faltered. The operation displaced hundreds as international tensions rose over weapons smuggling allegations linked to Arafat's Fatah.

Budget deficits loom as surpluses fade in 2000s

Washington notes the coming deficits under President Bush as surpluses fade after four years of fiscal gains. Democrats frame themselves as prudent while recession and war costs push the 2002 2011 surplus forecast down to 1.8 to 1.9 trillion, far below the earlier 5.6 trillion projection. CBO is expected to confirm a worse outlook.
