President Ford backs a one time about ten percent tax cut for 1974 and considers mailing Treasury rebate checks to millions of U.S. taxpayers to aid an antirecession program. White House advisers report approval of the plan pending Congress action.
The Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union and Gulf Oil Corp sign a two year contract raising wages 26.8 percent. The 60,000 member union had threatened a Thursday walkout after expiry of the previous contract. A F Grospiron called the package good though not all desires met.
President Ford announces Elliot Richardson, former attorney general who quit in 1973 rather than fire Archibald Cox, as his nominee for ambassador to Great Britain. Ford says Richardson will represent America with high distinction.
The Agriculture Department reports a 12 percent drop from a year earlier in first quarter 1975 output of major fresh vegetables. The Crop Reporting Board estimates total harvest at 30.8 million hundredweight, signaling tighter supermarket supplies through winter.
Smithsonian data show 26 tanker spills of 10 000 gallons or more and 11 in U S waters. The year also included seven radioactive leaks 13 ruptures 10 large on shore oil spills six fish kills one oil well blowout and many toxic chemical accidents.
A crowd of thousands surged toward an auditorium door in Atlanta as it opened to accept applications for 225 public service jobs. One woman was slightly injured by broken glass but order was restored. police said the crowd forced open four additional doors.
Thieves broke into Deaton's Red & White Supermarket early today on Vaucluse Road. They disabled the outdoor gas line and burglar alarm, then stole cigarettes beer snacks matches and work gloves along with a small amount of cash. Owner Leroy Deaton commented on the incident as the Aiken County Sheriff's Department investigates.

Illness in the Solicitor C LaVaun Fox office delays indictments though a list is expected by Monday. The docket includes murder cases a rape case drug and traffic charges and forgery cases. After criminal court Harwell will preside civil term for two weeks.
Two black male suspects robbed Eckerd's Drug Store at Mitchell Shopping Center at 9 p.m. taking 300 dollars and wounding John Kyle of 203 George St New Ellenton. Kyle was listed in stable but serious condition at University Hospital Augusta. Police describe one tall and one short suspect in their early twenties.
Aiken County residents back a petition led by Anne Hildreth to revoke a 20.1 percent electric rate hike by gathering names for the Public Service Commission hearing in Columbia. About 1,000 signatures collected, goal 10,000, with Ken Powell slated to present.
