Autopsy Shows Hiker Died From Blow to Head in Georgia

Autopsy confirms Meredith Emerson was beaten to death and decapitated while search teams looked for her in north Georgia mountains after her disappearance on New Year’s Day. Gary Hilton, 61, linked to the murder, led investigators to her body and faces kidnapping and murder charges. His bail request was denied as prosecutors pursue the case.

South Carolina Bankruptcy Filings Rise 18 Percent

The Charleston AP report notes SC bankruptcy filings climbed about 18 percent last year due to weak real estate and mortgage markets. Nearly 7,200 filings occurred, up around 2,000 from 2006, but about half of 2008 levels after law changes. Medical costs, divorces and job loss were common reasons.
