Westinghouse unions back seniority-free SRP layoffs plan
Westinghouse and 10 craft unions representing about 1 500 Savannah River Plant construction workers reached a mutual transition agreement through April 1. Performance will replace seniority as the layoff determinant, with Du Pont replaced by Bechtel Savannah River Co as lead SRP contractor and workers shifting from Du Pont to Bechtel.

737 Crashes on English Highway Killing 43

Last Budget Is Unveiled
President Reagan sent Congress a 1.15 trillion dollar farewell budget targeting a 92.5 billion dollar deficit for 1990, the lowest since he took office. Victims Of Wreck Mourned By School
Aiken couple Hubert Ray Woodward and Marie G Woodward died in a head on crash as they traveled to a Silver Bluff High School event. Dantzler Alvin Busbee Jr died in the crash after losing control at high speed. Busbee’s car crossed the center line. neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected. The Woodwards were longtime volunteers at band and athletics activities and had worked a concession at a band festival at South Aiken High School.

A survey of 308 007 freshmen entering 58 colleges shows rising focus on earnings and graduate study amid reduced federal aid. Only 10.6 percent received Pell grants, the lowest level since the study began 23 years ago, with more reliance on family, savings, loans, and institutional awards. The study covers first time full time entrants, with a 2 point margin of error.
