SC tax agency plans cuts without layoffs

South Carolina Revenue Director Ray Stevens told a House Ways and Means subcommittee that the Department of Revenue can absorb budget cuts without firing staff. The agency, which raises about 95 percent of the six point one billion general fund, reduced its budget from forty million to thirty one point four million with midyear reductions. Stevens cited unfilled positions and cost cuts in space printing and postage, noting taxpayers now receive CD discs instead of paper forms.
