Boston AP reports classes at the South Boston High school complex restarted without incident as 300-400 white pupils and 50-75 black children entered under protection of about 400 officers. Pupils passed through metal detectors. access limited to students and news crews amid police surveillance.
A. F. Grospi ron, president of the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union, declined to call a general strike after contracts expired. Despite no national walkout, Gulf and Texaco refineries at Port Arthur, Texas were struck while talks continued. The union noted progress and pledged to await potential gains in negotiations.
National Guards surrounding the Menominee occupied estate in Gresham report a cease fire while a mediator notes improved prospects for negotiation after Indian sympathizers were allowed to bring food to demonstrators. The Menominee Warrior Society had traded gunfire with police since occupying the Roman Catholic novitiate New Year's Day with no injuries reported.

The Aiken County Board of Commissioners authorized health department representatives to draft an application for a nurse midwife program. If approved in February and submitted to the Southeastern Council on Nurse Midwifery in March, the county would fund 30 500 dollars annually starting year two with 28 000 for two nurse midwives and 2 500 for physician consults. The program aims to reduce indigent maternity cases in Augusta and keep local revenue from leaving the county.
Four Aiken citizens filed a notice of appeal this morning after a circuit court dismissed their petition for judicial review of the approval for a new 19 bed hospital in Aiken County. The case moves toward the State Supreme Court, with a 30 day filing window and a typical six to nine month wait for a ruling.

James A. Williams 56 husband of Bessie Pearl Bell Williams of 508 Laurel Drive died yesterday afternoon. He served as Leavelle McCampbell High principal from 1962 to 1964 and was in his fourth year as Aiken Elementary principal. A lifelong Graniteville resident and USC 1968 and Appalachian State 1962 graduate, he was active in First Baptist Church and held Shriner and Masons membership. Funeral arrangements announced by Poseys Funeral Home.
County administrator Thomas F Williams will study a resignation threat by Dr H D Wyman as medical examiner at the Aiken County Jail and seek a recommendation from Sheriff Paul D Grant on action. Wyman says he will resign Jan 1 1975 if he cannot hire Dr Elizabeth Ledbetter and a certified assistant. Virgil Wilkins reports no medical service has been available since January and prisoners are told to pay for treatment.
