Flooded Nevada townscape freezes as canal bursts
Fernley Nevada endures a canal break that flooded about a square mile of the town with up to 2 feet of water as freezing conditions froze streets yards and drainage. Mayor Todd Cutler warned of up to 8 feet of water in spots while 1 500 residents were displaced. Rescue operations with boats helicopters and volunteers saved many from rooftops and cars. Governor Jim Gibbons cited possible structural weakness in the canal and urged caution.
