Three anonymous construction workers rescued a one year old child from a mobile home fire in Graniteville. The home at 1468 West Ave. was destroyed with an estimated damage of $30,000 as firefighters arrived at 2:35 p.m. and contained the blaze within minutes.

Washington reports December unemployment at 6.1 percent, the highest in over three years, with more than 1 million added to jobless rolls since June. The Labor Department cites 515,000 jobs lost in the last quarter and warns eight states may exhaust unemployment funds by midyear.
Aiken County finishes December with 4.8 million in property values and nearly 60 million for the year led by residential construction totaling 1.9 million. A South Carolina Law Institute study panel recommends an ethics package with jail terms up to one year and fines of ten thousand dollars for lawmakers and lobbyists who violate statutes. The plan asks a nine member Ethics Commission and broad reforms following an FBI probe that landed ten lawmakers in federal court.
The state study group recommends expanding the Ethics Commission from six to nine members and granting it full authority to regulate lobbyists. They call for quarterly lobbying reports, cap entertainment spending, bans on cash transactions and certain gifts, and limits on political contributions by lobbyists. The plan also tightens post employment rules for former officials and restricts agency sourcing for outside lobbyists.
US Attorney Bart Daniel prepared to announce new indictments against state legislators in the Operation Lost Trust probe. The case, ongoing since 1989, has felled 10 legislators and one lobbyist, with charges including bribery and drug possession.
A DOE spokesman said health studies on Savannah River and other nuclear plants will move to the Department of Health and Human Services. The memorandum signed last week outlines a transition with details to be worked out by both agencies. The panel urged strengthening the overall occupational health program and ensuring independence from the DOE.
