Pollution Follows Man To White Continent
At McMurdo Station Antarctica an anti-pollution drive reduces waste despite 14 years of dumping trash and raw sewage into McMurdo Sound. A new $175,000 incinerator starts this summer and a $225,000 sewage treatment plant is planned next year. Field parties will carry back all waste from dry valleys to prevent contamination while studies consider mini-treatment at South Pole Station and the broader impact of tourism on penguin rookeries.
