A December 26 water break at Aiken Technical College floods the Dale Phelon Information Technology Center. Officials say frozen coils in three variable air volume units caused the leak, with water spreading to three rooms and nearby areas. Drying should finish Friday, repairs start then, and classes resume as scheduled with some temporary shifts.
Aiken County summary court chief Rodger Edmonds announced an investigation into a magistrate after an audit revealed a discrepancy in court funds. Officials did not name the magistrate and described the issue as potentially involving tardy deposits, with a report to the Supreme Court pending.
Jamal Reynolds of Florida State, a star from Aiken, is a key defender as the 11 1 Seminoles face Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl aiming for another national championship. Reynolds, Lombardi Trophy winner and potential first round pick, has 55 tackles and 15 for loss this season and is plotting to pressure Heupel. He already earned a Fiesta Bowl ring last year with two sacks of Michael Vick.
Aiken resident Horace Cheatham owner of Cheatham Funeral Home died in a single vehicle crash on Pine Log Road near Beech Island Avenue at about 11 45 am. Highway Patrol says a medical problem may have caused the crash and no seat belt was in use. Cheatham, 56, was driving a 1970 Cadillac convertible and leaves a two-branch business in New Ellenton and Langley.
President elect George W. Bush nominated Len Spencer Abraham of Michigan for secretary of energy. Bush said Abraham shares his energy policy goals and will push for energy security, affordable energy, domestic production, and environmentally sensitive policies while meeting rising demand. Abraham thanked Americans, noting his Lebanese immigrant heritage.
