West Virginia Woman Filmed Ads On Smoking Dangers
Janet Wells, age 42, spent her last months taping television ads warning of smoking’s dangers after lung cancer spread to her brain and spine. The ads aired before her death on November 24, amid funding from a tobacco settlement. Her family notes increased quit-line calls and the ads’ impact on morale. Wells and husband Dwight, a school custodian, faced financial strain as Wells had been a Rainelle Elementary reading program coordinator. A simple grave site near their hilltop home marks her final resting place.
