Tenenbaum halts $36 million computer contract
State Education Superintendent elect Inez Tenenbaum suspended the five year contract with National Computer Systems from Mesa Arizona over concerns about affordability and need for legislative approval. The bid followed a three year research and procurement process with NCS chosen over six rivals. Republican former superintendent Barbara Nielsen criticized the move while noting federal funding would cover much of the cost.

Problems at Greenville Nursing Center prompt inmate ban
State prison officials will not house inmates at Grady Hipp Nursing Center until state investigation issues are fixed. The center, facing a December contract expiry, would need to hire staff at about 160,000 yearly to replace 23 female prisoners who work there. Issues include contraband, lack of female guards, and poor inmate whereabouts control. One male staffer was suspended for sex with a prisoner and an inmate escaped during escorted walk. Since a male inmate was convicted of raping a 72 year old in 1994, only female prisoners work at the center. Security upgrades are underway.
