Hundreds gathered for the Fourth annual First Night Aiken celebration as a Mardi Gras like mood met subfreezing temperatures. Organizers led a vibrant parade with feathers, noisemakers, and music while attendees penned hopeful messages on a large art display near the Arts Center.
The South Carolina Department of Social Services adds a child abuse registry to target any person convicted of harming a child. The registry will feed background checks for day care workers and foster care licenses, broadening prior rules that covered only parents guardians or sexual abusers.
The 95 year old South Carolina Republican senator Strom Thurmond remains in Eisenhower Medical Center with a respiratory infection.
