A DC-3 crash that killed Ricky Nelson and six others closes 1985, the deadliest year for commercial aviation. The year saw 1,946 deaths worldwide from major crashes including Air India off the Irish coast, Japan Airlines, and Arrow Air in Newfoundland, with U S incidents and many smaller accidents surrounding the toll.
The rock singer Ricky Nelson, 45, his fiancé Helen Blair, 27, four band members, and a sound man died when their privately owned DC-3 crashed in a northeastern Texas pasture. Pilot Brad Rank and co-pilot Kenneth Ferguson survived with critical burns. NTSB investigators planned to inspect the wreck as witnesses recalled smoke and an emergency descent.
A list of possible military actions against Mideast terrorists including air strikes on Libya was prepared for the White House. The Joint Chiefs sent the options to President Reagan after the Rome and Vienna airport attacks, but no major steps were taken to plan strikes.
