Guard Engineers Return After Border Fencing Mission
About forty members of the South Carolina National Guard 122nd Engineer Battalion from Edgefield wrap a three week border deployment in Arizona. They built fences along the Tucson Sector to deter illegal entry and drug smuggling. The unit will be replaced by other battalion platoons as Operation Jump Start continues. Maj. Sam Fink, chairman of the College Acres Public Works District, warned the Aiken City Council that annexing Whiskey Road could cut his district’s tax base and complicate legality. City Manager Roger LeDue cited plans to annex only the roadway with case by case expansion for nearby properties.
