Israeli army launches major incident at two West Bank camps
In a heavy assault backed by tanks and helicopter gunships on Bala ta and Jenin refugee camps, Israeli troops wounded 90 Palestinians and an Israeli soldier, with nine Palestinians killed. Militants reportedly vow to die rather than surrender as clashes mark 17 months of conflict. A Palestinian woman detonated an explosive near a checkpoint, injuring several, amid a broader surge in violence and amid Saudi peace proposals.

DNA samples sought from bin Laden family for identification
U S officials pursue DNA testing to determine if Osama bin Laden is dead or alive. They want to compare remains from Afghan bombing sites with relatives' DNA, likely from his mother’s side for a clear match, though paternal lines may also help. The bin Laden family, Saudi based, has disowned him.

Democrats weigh war support against Bush defense buildup
Democrats seek to back the war while challenging President Bush’s plan for the largest defense buildup in two decades. They argue the Afghanistan campaign is being used to justify higher Pentagon spending, noting it is less costly than the 1991 Gulf War and 1999 Kosovo air campaign. Senate Budget Chairman Kent Conrad says the budget tactic skirts the real needs cited by the Pentagon. Bush officials defend the plan as necessary to fight terrorism globally, upgrade equipment and reorganize forces for the 21st century.
