USC defeated Allen University 78 to 68 for a homecoming win. Katarina Witt won Olympic gold in women's figure skating while Debbie Thomas earned bronze after a difficult performance. USC also beat Florida State 81 to 78.

In Harrisburg, Bud Post, 48, from Erie, won half of a 32 million Super 7 prize after two days of study and a proven premonition. He will receive 497 953.47 as the first of 26 annual payments. A separate winning ticket by a Westinghouse group in Pittsburgh remains to be verified.

Deposed Panamanian president Eric Arturo Delvalle fled his home on foot after government agents warned him to leave. Diaz, his brother in law, said Delvalle was in hiding to avoid arrest and possible deportation by Gen. Manuel Noriega. A national strike by the opposition began slowly as details emerged of Delvalle slipping out a back door with his wife and children reportedly elsewhere.
Israeli soldiers killed three Palestinians during clashes in the occupied territories. Hospital officials reported two other Palestinians fatally shot and 27 wounded. The victims include 17 year old Maged Al Atrash of Halhoul and 20 year old Nihad Abdul Ghafour of Arrab, with Baker Abdullah Al Bao, 17, of Halhoul also named in the hospital tally. Protesters in Jerusalem and other cities burned fires and threw rocks amid Shultz peace mission protests. Police detained two American teachers carrying posters listing slain Arabs’ names.
The Savannah River Plant severance totaling about 75 million dollars will boost Aiken County's economy with likely increased spending and savings. Officials say the impact could raise retail sales by several percent, with workers possibly making luxury purchases as they receive extended severance under DOE guidance.
