Inmate Pleads Guilty in Perry Prison Helicopter Escape

One of the four Perry Correctional Institution escapees pleads guilty to air piracy. Jesse Smith 36 joins William Ballew 43 Joyce Mattox 40 and James Leonard 20 who admitted being accessories after the fact. The four were found four days later asleep at an Interstate 95 rest stop in Georgia.

Senate approves TV on trial basis

The Senate approved a summer experiment to televise floor debates beginning May 1 with radio broadcasts and closed circuit in the chamber. Public transmissions start June 1 as a $3.5 million plan allows networks to connect, ending July 15 after a 12 day recess. coverage may be limited to cable systems in many cities.

U.S. trade deficit hits January record of 16.5 billion

The Commerce Department reports January 1985 deficit at 16.5 billion, up 9.3 percent from December's revised 15.1 billion. Imports rose to 33.5 billion while exports edged higher to 17.0 billion, with Japan supplying about one third of the deficit. The weaker dollar has yet to improve the balance.

John Demjanjuk, the first alleged Nazi war criminal extradited by the United States to Israel, arrives to face charges of mass murder for allegedly aiding gas chambers at Treblinka in 1942 43. Planeload of Marcos Money and Weapons Arrives

A second C-141 delivered hundreds of Marcos family personal effects to Hickam Air Force Base as U S authorities cautious about reports of cash and weapons. House Passes Crime Bill Clears House in swift 95-1 vote

The South Carolina House approved Gov. Dick Riley’s omnibus crime and prison overcrowding bill 95 to 1 after eight months of committee work. Rep. Jennings McAbee dissented arguing the measure should have a Ways and Means review. Riley praised the floor handling and said core prison and sentencing provisions remain intact. Jim Grego of Citizens Against Violent Crime welcomed the gains.
