Battle of Aiken reenactment draws record crowds
The 140th Anniversary Battle of Aiken opened at Confederate Memorial Park with clear skies and cavalry charges as tens of thousands gathered. Pete Peters of the Sons of Confederate Veterans estimated about 7,000 attendees on day one, higher than last year, while reenactor Karl Slade, originally from Australia, joined the Confederate Army sequence.

Marine death at Parris Island prompts investigations
A recruit from West Virginia died after a February 8 incident at the Parris Island Marine Corps depot pool. Six Marines were suspended as three investigations proceed into the drowning of 19 year old Jason Tharp of Sutton. Video showed a drill instructor grabbing Tharp at poolside.
