The Family Y already serves 13 Aiken County schools with on site care for elementary children and seeks to open a facility in Aiken. Dan McConnell says community driven input is essential and a meeting is set for today at 7 p.m. at St Thaddeus Episcopal Church. A survey is planned for residents in January to gauge interest.
After a warm start with 70s in Aiken, rain and cooler air move in today with highs near 50 and lows in the 40s to 50s. Northeasterly winds around 16 mph today, then 5 to 10 mph tonight. Skies clear by Friday with highs near 60 and light west winds, then weekend temps in the upper 50s with a drop to the upper 30s Saturday night. Rain returns Sunday in the lower 60s. The Washington Center offers the play A Flea in Her Bar opening Friday at 8 pm with performances March 1, 7, 8, 14, 15 and a 3 pm Sunday matinee March 9. Reservations at 648-1438. tickets sold Tue–Fri 9 am–2 pm and Tue/Wed evenings 7–9 pm. unclaimed seats released 15 minutes before curtain.
Augusta and North Augusta officials plus CSRA Community Foundation leaders discuss three proposed river bridges the Savannah crossing 1520 area pedestrian link to the Greeneway and a trans river walkway once railroad tracks are moved. They seek a regional mindset to boost industry and cooperation among Aiken and Edgefield counties and the cities of Aiken, Augusta and North Augusta.
Fred Rogers, beloved host of Mister Rogers Neighborhood, died of stomach cancer at age 74 in his Pittsburgh home. Family spokesman David Newell, who played Mr. McFeely, praised Rogers for his genuine kindness and lifelong mission to educate and support families and children through television, books, and records.
The Aiken City and County Councils will hear a recommendation from Atlanta consultants Jordan Jones and Goulding next month on seven proposed routes for a Whiskey to Silver Bluff connector road. Public input and engineering needs will shape the choice, with January comments and over 130 attendees noted by Ed Evans.
