Nightmarish testimony in Exxon Valdez case at anchorage
Expert witness Greiner Jr. described a nightmare scenario of flooding and deaths from Hazelwood’s attempt to free the Exxon Valdez from Bligh Reef. He testified the ship could have flooded crew below and risked lives by driving the tanker off the reef as defense argued the vessel could not move after striking the reef. The oil spill, nearly 11 million gallons, devastated Prince William Sound wildlife and coastline. Hazelwood, 43, faces charges of drunken and reckless conduct for leaving the bridge before the accident and attempting to move the ship afterward.
