Aiken Standard Raises Prices March 3

The Aiken Standard will raise prices starting March 3. An issue costs 20 cents and monthly subscriptions move to 3.90 dollars, up from 2. The notice cites inflation, higher costs for phototypesetting paper and photographic supplies, and increased newsprint and delivery costs as reasons.

Soviet Bombing of Afghan Villages Reported

Intelligence sources in Washington say the Soviet Union bombed two villages in Laghman Province near Jalalabad for two days after Afghan army deserters killed 13 Soviet advisers and joined insurgents. About 80 villagers were killed. no casualties among the deserters.

Iran Says Hostage Fate Delayed Until Parliament

An Iranian official stated the fate of the U S hostages in Tehran would not be decided by the new Majlis until May at the earliest. Mohammed Behesti, first secretary of the Revolutionary Council, said elections finish April 3 and 10 weeks are needed to organize the parliament.

County Rejects Federal Flood Insurance Plan

Salley men again sentenced to die in electric chair

J D Gleaton and Larry Gilbert of Salley were sentenced to die for the murder and robbery of Ralph Stoudemire at a South Congaree service station. A Lexington County jury, after reconsidering mitigating factors, again imposed the death penalty under the state’s capital punishment law.
