Savannah River Site engineers James Petty and Paul Gazda visited Paul Knox Middle School during National Engineers Week to demonstrate force and flight principles with simple equipment and to engage students in hands on experiments. The visit followed a year earlier trip to Bowman Academy in Bowman SC and supported a long standing program to inspire careers in engineering.
A DOE spokesman said Savannah River will join Hanford Idaho and Oak Ridge in treating mixed low-level waste from other sites. The plan aims to close former defense facilities, redirect funds to cleanup, and improve safety and efficiency, though a timetable for the Savannah River permit modification was not provided.
The 135th Battle of Aiken reenactment pits north against south at the Carolina Star Gun and Hunt Club eight miles from downtown Aiken. About 2,500 local school children attend yearly. tickets soar to 8 for adults and 4 for children 6 to 17 with free entry for under 5. The event runs Friday to Sunday with tours, period crafts, a BBQ, oyster roast, night artillery, and a church service. Public hours include 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. advance tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce.
