The Aiken Standard will install a new tele phone system on Thursday after noon, possibly causing brief phone service interruptions especially between noon and 2 pm. If calls fail Thursday afternoon, please try again. The paper apologizes in advance for any inconvenience and says the upgrade will help serve customers better.
The national grassroots group Economic Security 2000 visits Columbia proposing to phase out Social Security and replace it with individual retirement accounts funded partly from payroll deductions. President Sam Beard cites looming deficits and urges saving the program.

Renny Trotter, noted for steady community service, earned the Aiken Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Year honor for 1996 after first receiving the award in 1993. She volunteers with 36 chamber members, believing in giving to the community.
Rick Wallace a 36 year old father of six and his wife took money for a truck payment to visit a York County video poker parlor. He describes hitting a rare blackjack combo yielding a 700000 payoff before an attendant unplugged the machine and officials called it a malfunction. The parlor says Wallace lacked the claimed cards and state law caps 24 hour payoffs at 125.
The Aiken Center for Alcohol and Drug Services asked the State Law Enforcement Division to audit its past fiscal year finances. Executive director Herbert Mattocks said no embezzlement suspicions exist, only concerns about abysmal accounting. The board approved seeking a SLED inquiry with no timetable.
Negotiations between Aiken Regional Medical Centers and Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina have resumed. Blue Cross spokeswoman Donna Thorne said they are negotiating again and aim for a satisfactory conclusion for the people of Aiken. ARMC and its physicians have clashed with Blue Cross over reimbursement fees, with Blue Cross alleging ARMC doctors seek higher rates than elsewhere in the state. ARMC contends Blue Cross discriminated by paying higher rates to certain local physicians. The dispute involved a contract under Blue Cross Preferred Care that was dropped.
