Sanford pitches plan to Senate Judiciary reforming state offices
Gov. Mark Sanford testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee as amendments weakened his plan to shrink nine elected statewide offices to four and merge duties. The panel kept adjutant general, agriculture commissioner and lieutenant governor elected, while considering making the education superintendent an appointed post, a move described by critics as partisan. The committee adjourned without vote, planning to resume next week.
