Food Prices Down Energy Up in January Inflation Report

The Labor Department reports January CPI rose 0.7 percent led by higher gasoline up 3.8 percent and energy costs. Grocery foods fell 0.4 percent while meats and eggs dropped 2.4 percent, but cereals and dining out rose. real earnings fell 0.1 percent.

Desegregation Task Force Eyes Trustees Reform

A blue ribbon desegregation panel in Columbia will hear a plan to increase black trustees on South Carolina state colleges including Clemson and USC. The proposal, approved by the task force subcommittee led by Sen. Harry Chapman, seeks sweeping changes in trustee selection to boost minority representation amid a federal Education Department push and a March 8 plan deadline.

Five Council Members Oppose Arts Center in Aiken

A council poll shows five of eight members would reject the Higher Education Commission request for 270000 to support the USC Aiken Fine Arts Center. Only three would vote for the grant, with one member favoring a referendum. The project would cost about 27000 annually and rely on a 4.5 million price tag.
