Peaches survive cold spell in South Carolina
In Aiken County peaches remain dormant as a arctic blast passes through the Southeast. J W Yonce and Sons estimates only slight damage to buds, about 5 to 10 percent, with the overall crop kept safe as dormancy persists. The Ridge area hosts over 13,000 acres of peach orchards with 4,000 acres belonging to Yonce. Yonce notes peach season starts mid May, weather dependent, and last year’s freeze in March damaged 30 percent of the crop, causing at least $27 million in losses for South Carolina.
