ACTS Named a Point of Light in Aiken Community
ACTS Area Churches Together Serv ing, an Aiken interdenominational ministry, is honored as Daily Point of Light for decades of service to the needy. Marge Glauser, ACTS manager, notes 200 plus volunteers monthly and 25 to 30 volunteers daily across three shifts. The outreach began in 1986 through First Presbyterian Church of Aiken after Pat Bishop urged coordinated local effort.

Two public agencies plan to appeal a Circuit Court decision ordering the return of more than 100 million dollars in seized tax refunds fees and interest. Judge Gary Clary warned the ruling could bankrupt public hospitals as authorities argue the Revenue Department overstepped law and abuses occurred. Agencies processed 190000 claims and collected about 47 million in 1997 98.

Standoff on Goldman Avenue Ends Peacefully
Harold Nichols surrendered after a near two hour standoff with North Augusta police. Officers surrounded his home after he brandished a pistol and made threats during a disorderly conduct call from parents in the North Augusta Elementary carpool line. Nichols, who has a history of psychiatric issues, was charged with disorderly conduct presenting and pointing a firearm and resisting arrest. Police found multiple weapons in his home after a search warrant.

The Aiken High School and South Aiken High School cheer squad, the Aiken Elite Allstars, claimed the small senior division national championship at the Cheersport Cheerleader and Dance Competition in Atlanta.
