Storm Fells Trees and Destroys Structure in Aiken Area

High winds and heavy rain hit Aiken and nearby areas early today. A tree crushed a house in the Gem Lakes Subdivision while other trees were uprooted. A portion of Trash and Treasures on SC Highway 1 was destroyed and several sheds were damaged. Firefighters benefited from the rain after days of grass and woods fires.

Bridge Rips Open Revealing Cars Lost in James River

A tanker caused a bridge section on the Benjamin Harrison Bridge to break away over the James River in Hopewell Virginia. Four cars plunged into the water. two people were rescued from about 25 feet deep. No bodies recovered. the Marine Floridian remains trapped beneath the wreckage.

Rabin Wins Labor Leadership by Narrow Margin

Yitzhak Rabin was re-elected Labor Party leader with 1,445 votes to Defense Minister Shimon Peres's 1,404, a 41 vote margin. He urged immediate party unity to face Israel's tough election challenge and pledged to lead the nation toward peace, security, and economic and social advancement.

Turner Seen Set for Senate Confirmation as CIA Director

The Senate Intelligence Committee backed Adm Stansfield Turner 17-0 for CIA director with a full Senate vote expected today. Turner, 53, was Carter's choice to head the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and lead US strategic arms talks with the Soviets. Warnke faced continued questioning over arms control positions.

Amin says invasion force near Uganda border

President Idi Amin's regime announced a Tanzanian invasion force six miles from Uganda. Radio Uganda quoted a spokesman warning that any entry into Ugandan territory would provoke deep retaliation by Amin's marines and air force units.

Zoning Board Denies Restaurant Conversion Vote Rejects private home to restaurant plan

The Louisville Georgia zoning Board of Adjustments unanimously denied a variance to convert the George M Morris residence on Hayne Avenue into a restaurant. Dairy Commission Member Calls for Agency Preservation

Aiken dairy consumer Rep Mrs. George R. Price warns abolition would be disastrous for small dairy farmers. She notes the Dairy Commission regulates milk production and pricing, and says protection is needed beyond her year on the panel. The House defeated a bill to end the commission.

Winds, Trees Damage Homes Across Aiken Area

A severe storm caused roof damage at the Wayne Baker home on Gem Lakes and damaged sheds at W Bill Gunter’s Powder House Road and Edward Seigler’s New Holland Road. Trees uprooted along Powder House and Banks Mill Roads, a tree fell on a child’s merry go round at Charles Knight’s Quail Hollow home, and many residents learned of damage at daylight. No tornadoes were reported locally. a tornado was sighted near Athens, Georgia. Civil Defense Director L C Greene cited Augusta weather data, noting no radar-confirmed tornadoes. Aiken had minor flooding and scattered limbs down as a tornado watch covered the region amid a line of thunderstorms. The National Weather Service attributed the event to a very active cold front moving across western South Carolina and expected to move offshore later today. Rain totals near one inch were recorded.
